Consequences

Evocative of the dinosaur skeletons found in many of the great science and history museums throughout the world, this sculpture underlines the impressive size and girth of the graceful manatee. The piece pushes the viewer to think of the vulnerability of these animals - how quickly they could be gone from our planet, and how closely connected all animals - humans included - are to our ecosystems.

Hardwood Lumber of Lakeland donated the lumber for this project. The wood is East Indian Rosewood and was salvaged from a Tampa garden several years ago after a storm.

The piece uses various construction techniques such as bent lamination (ribs), brick stack lamination (head) and hand carving (tail). Carl Johnson of Artisan's Workshop, who donated his time, directed the engineering for this project.

Alison Swann-Ingram designed, built, and carved in her workshop in the Bustello y Diaz cigar factory in West Tampa. Alison grew up in England and subsequently studied at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. She now designs and builds sculpture and unique organic furniture her work can be seen at www.swannwoodwork.com
